mudflat walking with kids

Amazement. The most important thing in biology education in my opinion. Get the kids amazed by all the different forms of life on this planet. From the large mammals and birds to the small crustaceans on the mudflat. In the normal biology program there is only little space for this. But once a year we take all the 1st class pupils to the Wadden Sea near Lauwersoog and let them experience nature. We fish in the Wadden Sea with a large net, with small nets in the Lauwersmeer (a fresh water lake just inland) and finally we walk on the mudflat, the “dry” bottom of the sea. It is really nice to see pupils that are normally really afraid of spiders pick up shrimps and other crustaceans and other kids run around on the mudflat, getting themselves (and others) really dirty.

This way they gain some knowledge about nature and, above all, learn that nature can be really fun and is worth protecting.
