Glacial retreat


I’m often asked what I can see of the changing climate in the Arctic. This is always hard to answer as there is a huge yearly variance. We have to sail further north each year to find the sea ice (this time we had to get to 81 degrees north again). And also the glaciers are retreating. In this picture you can see the old glacial moraine above the glacier. This line was made by the glacier about 200 years ago at the end of the little ice age. So the glacier used to be a lot thicker as it is now. The small rocky island was still completely covered by the glacier when I came there for the first time, ten years ago. So this picture shows glaciers not only retreat, but also get a lot thinner, putting more water in the ocean and increasing its level…
