Prehistoric bird

Southern Giant Petrel

Southern Giant Petrels look a bit prehistoric. These birds are very much at home at sea with their wingspan of about 2 meters, but at land they are very clumsy. They are definitely not made for walking or any life on land. Sometimes we see them ‘walking’ in between the Fur Seals, looking for a dead pup to eat and during the landing at Godthul we saw several individuals on a nest, like the one in this picture. It seemed he (or she) wanted to leave as quickly as possible and head back out to the beloved sea, but it was stuck on the nest for nearly 2 months of incubation… Hopefully the partner would return soon to relieve him/her of this ordeal…
