One of the highlights of my past Antarctic season were the albatrosses behind the ship and especially the Wandering and Royals with their wingspan of around 3.5 meters… For these big albatrosses it takes several years before they reach their adult plumage. Most of the birds we saw already had the characteristic plumage with dark wings (who get more and more white with the age) and a white body. During the last trip however, two young birds (2nd – 3rd year birds) were following the ship for a couple of hours. For me a great opportunity to spent some time taking pictures of these magnificent birds. In this case I’ve opted just to include half of the bird, to emphasise the size of these giants.
Amazing! I hope to seen an albatross someday!
