Black and white photography takes a different approach as colour photography. Normally colour attracts the attention, so adding a colourful object to the image is an ‘easy’ way of creating a point of attention in an image. With black and white photography this obviously doesn’t work. Here patterns, contrast, structure or rhythm has to make an image. This often means that it’s better to take a picture with the idea to turn it into a black and white instead of just taking a colour image and removing the colour.
In this case I noticed the rhythm of the birch trees and their reflection in the water. In reality there was already very little colour, which made it easier to come up with this idea for a black and white image.
