Spirits of the dead

Northern Lights in Norway

Of course, I know that the aurora is caused by charged particles emitted by the Sun being attracted by the Earth’s magnetic field hitting atoms who emit light. This technical explanation is a lot more boring as the ones the native people of the North had. Most of their explanations had something to do with spirits of the dead in the sky. Either dead animals they hunted or dead relatives. And if they were very bright, the spirits tried to get in touch with the people at Earth.

Seeing spectacular displays like this, I can very well imagine would watch in awe and think of spiritual explanations for this. For me, I just keep on watching in awe…
