New dragonflies

In the Netherlands the dragonfly season has barely started. Few species have been seen already (none by me though) and with the cold spell now, I doubt many new ones will emerge these days…

Long Skimmer

Here on the Cape Verde islands, things are different. I suppose the dragonfly season is year round here. With these temperatures it’s not necessary to maintain seasons. I could only find very little info on the dragonflies of the Cape Verde islands, so I just went there and had myself surprised… It’s really weird to walk around somewhere and see only new species of dragonfly… Two species are really common, the Violet Dropwing and the Long Skimmer, as seen in the picture above. There are several others, but with the temperatures they’ve got here, they’re not very willing to sit down, which makes taking pictures complicated and identification also problematic. If I ever get back here, I’ll try to do some more research and spent some more time hunting these dragons… This one at least was very willing to pose.
