Smell

Walrus

One of the highlights of a visit to a Walrus haul out site is always the smell. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for the readers) the smell can still not be captured in a photograph. Especially when a large group hauls out together, the smell can be really bad. And we often pick the direction of the approach in such a way that the wind is going from the animals towards us, so they cannot hear us.

Looking at a close up of their face, you wonder why they have such a big noses… Maybe they do like their own smell?
