Spitsbergen Ptarmigan

Ptarmigans are often quite hard to find, so I was quite happy that we found a pair close to our landing site. They were feeding a little and not that shy. A good landing already, especially for the birders and photographers. After a while the female was walking in front of the male and suddenly pushed herself on the ground. For the male this was apparently the sign to jump on her back and start mating. This didn’t take too long, but it was really nice to see this behaviour for a change. Soon they will have chicks and become a lot more skulky, making it a lot more difficult to find them…
