a Maze

Axeløya, Spitsbergen

A landing on Axeløya on Spitsbergen is always interesting. This long, thin island must be a great place to walk for geologists. Due to folding of the Earth are the usually horizontal sedimentary layers now turned 90º and are flat next to each other. This means you can walk back in time by walking from one end to the other. Really interesting to do, but also a bit difficult. As some of the layers are eroded more as others, a real maze is created. One has to look carefully how to get from one side to the other. Once you reach the other side, nice flat tundra awaits with lots of birds feeding on it.
