The ships I work on are expedition cruise ships. This means they are different from the big cruise ships. Where most of the entertainment on those cruises can be found onboard with several restaurants, bars, cinemas, swimming pools, beauty salons and so on, in our ships we have to find the entertainment outside. Yes of course, there is a restaurant, a bar and a lecture room, but apart from that we have to find our entertainment outside. Fortunately the ship takes to some of the most breathtaking places on Earth, both Polar regions, so there is more as enough to see.
Even when we’re in the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica there is enough to see. When the seas are calm and there is a little bit of wind there is a multitude of birds flying around, amongst which this Southern Fulmar. And the more time you spent looking outside, the more species you’ll see. And when the seas are not calm… Well, then either you can enjoy the forces of nature and watch the ship make her way through the big waves, or you might just spent your time in bed, hoping this will all be over soon…
