This late in the season means the penguins have finished breeding. This also means the easy pickings for the Brown Skuas are over. No more eggs to steal or chicks to grab. Fortunately there are several dead penguins left to scavenge on, like this bird is doing. But soon it’s time to head north, some are already on their way as proved by the couple of skuas that we saw in the middle of the Drake passage. They will be back again next season, ready for more juicy penguin eggs or chicks.
