As I wrote before we had difficulties finding Polar Bears in the north. And we also had problems doing things in general as most landing sites are blocked by ice. So we decided to head south instead. Hornsund, the southernmost fjord on Spitsbergen which is also a very good site for Polar Bears. There are many glaciers with ice in front of it which seals on it giving enough food for bears. The first day we arrived in the fjord we already found a bear. First on the fast ice seen from the ship and later walking along the shores from the zodiac. This bear, a female, wasn’t really fat. This was a bit surprising as we’re just at the end of the best feeding period for Polar Bears, the pupping period for Ringed Seals. She should be really fat now with enough fat reserves to live through summer. Fortunately she’s in an area where there are enough seals through summer, so she might be able to get some more food during the summer.
