Another species that is making a nice recovery is the Walrus. Almost hunted to extinction on Spitsbergen in the 20th century they got protected halfway the previous century. And now they slowly start to return. First the males came over from Frans Joseph Land in the north east and now slowly we find more and more females and even calfs in the east as well. When I started guiding we only knew a few places where they would haul out on the west coast, now there are many.
