Even with all the ice around, bears will not pass by a dead whale washed up ashore. Scavenging is easy feeding, while hunting for seals is hard work. The only problem with a dead whale like this that you might have to share. Larger males might scare away smaller ones or females. But then, when there is enough food, those smaller bears can probably get enough as well.

When the snow melted this year, an older Sperm Whale carcass emerged from under it. Soon several bears showed up. First a mother with a young cub, later also others who chased the first away. For us an easy way to find bears, for our guests a nice experience.
I like this photo for the perspective it lends of the gigantic sperm whale. What a thrilling find.
