Last week, I posted about the CCAMLR-meeting in Hobart, Australia and the hope for more Marine Protected Area’s (MPA’s) around Antarctica. On Friday this meeting ended, without any significant news. Despite the support of many of the 24 nations plus the EU, they couldn’t reach consensus about the new plans for MPA’s in East Antarctica and/or the Weddell Sea. Apparently mainly China and Russia vetoed the plans, meaning CCAMLR didn’t continue in the good direction they headed to last year. I’m sure they will try again next year, but it would have been so nice if they managed to reach consensus this year…
