Small Surprises

Most people come to the Arctic to see the large mammals, Polar Bears, Walrus and maybe some whales or birds. However, there is much more to see. Despite only being around 1300km from the geographical North pole, Spitsbergen has around 180 species of flowering plants.

Alpine Saxifrage – 310mm, 1/125s, f/8.0, ISO400

Do not expect anything bigger as a few centimetres and you need to go down on your knees for it, but it is much worth it. My favourites are the different saxifrages, like these Tufted and Alpine saxifrages.
