When you arrive in Ny Ålesund, you can hardly miss them: the Tre Kroner, or the Three Crowns. On every souvenir you can buy in the shop, you see the stylised outline of these mountains. These three peaks, Dana, Norra and Svea, can, with good weather, seen at the end of Kongsfjord. Now, this ‘with good weather’ is key here. Typically the clouds low clouds covering the inner parts of the fjord and hide these summits. Despite having studied in Ny Ålesund for six months (way back when), I never really took a beautiful picture of these mountains.

Until the last trip, we were walking on Ossian Sarsfjellet, a bird cliff also in the inner parts of the fjord, when we had good views on these pyramid-shaped summits. Time to call for a photo opportunity for the guests and get my own camera out as well. So, finally, I now have some nice pictures of these very characteristic mountains.
