Arctic Species: Common Ringed Plover

Besides the Purple Sandpiper, there are a few other waders that we can see on Spitsbergen. One of them is the Common Ringed Plover. With only around 500 breeding pairs, it’s not a common sight on Spitsbergen. They typically breed on stony tundra, close to water, where they make a small nest in a depression in the ground.

They are mainly found in the western parts of Spitsbergen.
